Displaying Information in Classy Popup Windows

A "lightbox" is a very classy way of displaying information to your readers in a popup window.  The JCE Utilities extension for Joomla provides a very simple way to add this capability to your website.

This can be added to any link in your page by adding two parameters to the link to specify height and width of the popup window, and by adding a class name to the link so that the readers browser knows to call the special code to make the popup appear.

For example:

<a href="http://www.roarz.com/portal/monthly-service-plans.htm?bw=740&bh=460" class="jcebox">

Here is an example of how this looks from our website:

Click to Compare Service Plans

A special icon is provided in the content editor to make creating these links easy.

Over use of this feature would make it difficult for the reader to find everything they need.  However, at times when you just want to provide additional information, such as detailed specficiations, comparisons, or further information that would normally clutter up the screen , this is a great too.  It delivers extra information without forcing the reader to navigate away to an entirely new page.

Additional information on usage of this feature is available at the owners website:

It's even better than you think
A really nice aspect of this script is that you don't get into the whole "how do I make a page modal child window" problem; you can do it, I've done it, it (mostly) worked. Notice that when you click off the lightbox that it closes it down and returns to the "page" that you were on.

I've seen this technique used to great effect in web applications to let people do the style of interface for where a dropdownlist is just too big.

I spent a couple of days trying to crack this one... The complexity came from trying to bring the right set of jscript libraries together for this to happen. Thanks to the JCE team for providing the simple solution to this in the end.
